Crikey! Pulling into Prescott Speed Hill Climb and it’s immediately obvious that the Retro Rides Gathering has grown considerably. Even though we’d arrived earlier than last year, we had no chance of landing the same parking slot for the revitalised Landcrab. The place was heaving!
There were more cars on show, more brave souls tearing up the fabled hill (more frequently) and more clubs. If ever you wanted to understand how catholic the notion of ‘retroness’ is, then all you need do is make a note of the Gathering’s date and pop along. It’s also a reason why so few people are willing or foolish to try and accurately define it – or should that be confine it? If you like it, then you’ll get it.
Memorable machines? Amidst the familiar and not-so-familiar, there was the 1000+bhp SWB Audi Quattro which brought back GpB memories for me and Gez was talking about Beetles again, after talking in all the air-cooled scenery. Especially, the ‘Stealth Beetles’ wearing MkI Golf and Citroën Dyane bodies.
An interesting development this year, was the number of modified modern refugees who either came along individually or with a club, following what has been a slow and drawn-out death of the ‘chooned’ Max Power thing. It was almost as if there was a sense of anticipation in the air.
Anyway, enough of this futile finger-bashing, please do enjoy our Retro Rides Gathering highlights…
