Hi everyone,

I picked up a 93 Rover 220 coupe (NASP) recently, £100 and had been stood for 3 years. The owner thought it was badly broken as it wouldnt go but it was just the starter, so £29 on ebay and it went through an MOT!

Anyway, Ive got started on improving it and picked up some GAZ coilovers on the Tomcat forum. The fronts swapped out with no trouble, but the rears are giving me greif.

The nearside is done, but while torquing up a main bolt holding the trailing arm to the hub carrier, it sheared, luckily with about 1cm of thread protruding so theres something, but any ideas on how to get it free? Mole grips just slide off, a welded on bolt nut just cracked off. I could put a nut further back to spanner and weld a second to brace it. Stud extracter drill bits wont work as the thread runs in the wrong direction.

Its opposite number had been stuck fast and I rounded the head, but hammering a 1/2" socket onto the 13mm bolt freed it. The bolt at the bottom of the shock absorber is the same, and despite days of WD40 remains stuck and the 1/2" trick isnt working.

Does anyone hae any clever tricks Ive not thought of? I dont really want to use heat as its so close to the brake lines, ABS gubbins and bushes which I cant afford to repalce at the moment!

Thanks

Matt

looks like heat is your best option, remove anything that will be affected by the heat, maybe even remove the hub assembly and do in a vice (if you have one) maybe some freeze spray... regards ricky

Freeze Your Nuts Off works great.

I would recommend 5 or 6 times of freeze spray to contract the metal then douse in WD40, then leave 20 mins and repeat , do this 4 time sover, then get some plumbers Stilson grips on the protruding part, they will not slip , and I swear by them where all else fails.
