This is a game for a slow afternoon.

Log on to Autotrader. Select the cheapest price (500 notes) and select the shortest distance (10 miles) from your home. Now take your pick from the inspiring choice of tin.

Here's mine:

(Although I wish it was a pre-facelift model with the silly dash!)

My brother had an Uno which turned ever more pink with each passing year. It was serviced by a 'specialist' who decided to see if the roof was rusting by punching a hole in its roof.

Yeah, cheers for that.

It was up there with a Renault dealer who cut open the rubber boot protecting the wiring for the heated rear screen on a Savanna. Why? They wanted to see why it was still working.

Once bitten...

Looks like we're going to have change the hunting ground to something beginning with the letter 'E'...

You'll need to look at ended items, or 'buy it nows' to get a real indication of what you can get....

Not much here either... the scrappage scheme must have had a bigger impact than we thought!

Not exactly road legal though....

If I go a little further afield then this lot is on offer:

http://www.autotrade...149ae?logcode=p

http://www.autotrade...age/1?logcode=p

http://www.autotrade...149ae?logcode=p

A few years ago £500 would have easily netted you an iffy, but road legal selection from this list:

MkIII Supra
Gen 1 Rx7
Gen 2 Rxy (non turbo)
Mx-3
An endless supply of Celica's
Bottomless 3 series Beemers
Any kind of Rover

However, I reckon with a bit of haggling cars like my LS400 can be had for that sort of money now that fuel has gotten up to the same price per liter as bulls sperm....

I am wondering if there is more demand for cars like these. Given that the new stuff is all engineered down to cost, so that whenever anything goes wrong it costs stupid money to replace the part/sub-assembly.

My LS is just coming up to 180,000 miles... so far I've replaced the alternator and two exhaust gaskets...

Mechanically my MR2 is sound but it's not quite up to today’s refinement standards. I’m sure the LS is still superior to most though?

the LS is coming down in price as is the GS as well, probably due to fuel costs, a friend of mine has just bought one (the LS) to break up as a doner car for his mx5, apparently the v8 does fit... but lots of work i would have thought.. regards ricky

I've heard they're quite a popular engine swap in the States already.
