Hello all, I have an old Merc 190 with an automatic gearbox, now when pulling away, or coming to a stop I can hear some sort of buzzing, solenoid type noise. Is this normal? I've never had an auto before, let alone a twenty year old one.

Your Auto box does contain at least one solenoid - something to do with delaying the gearbox changing up when in kick down. It might well be this you can here. Modern auto transmissions always buzz like that. Where is the noise coming from? The fuel pump is very noisy on 80's vehicles, after you have pulled away the noise of the car would drown it out but at idle it would be quite pronounced.

Cheers Richard. Seems more on braking (car is not yet a daily driver so only using it occasionally), possibley something ABS related. It still pulls up smart and straight so not really bothered.

the abs will buzz when activated ie when braking if one wheel gives a different speed than the others, the abs kicks in and may sound like a buzz.. you would need to check the discs and pads for operation and wear, if all ok then you need to plug in a diagnostics system into it and diagnose the fault, but is more commonly the discs and pads..

if it is the gearbox making the noise then same thing plug into a diagnostics machine, could also be an oil change in the gearbox thats needed, old oil doesn't work very well in autos.. regards ricky
