Scoop! Exclusive! World’s First Pix!! Only of course they aren’t. No, these are renderings which have been released ahead of this exciting machine’s debut at the 2012 Pebble Beach concours.

The Porsche 550-inspired Vintech has been built by French design house Group D3 to pay tribute to the old Porker, using 21st Century materials and reinterpreted styling touches.

Due to be unveiled at ‘The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering’ this Friday (17th August), the Vintech is a carbon-bodied gull-wing two-seater powered by a 270bhp 3-litre four-cylinder ‘boxer’ engine that drives the rear wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox.

In other words, this machine – or Vintech P550 Tribute to use its correct moniker – has the potential to go as well as it looks suggest.

Group D3 adds: ‘We did not intend to simply fabricate a replica of the original Porsche 550 coupe design. What we wanted to do was to keep as much of the character of the original vehicle, while accepting indispensable compromises in order to fabricate a completely functional vehicle that could be used.’

Will it become a low-volume production reality? Its doubtful, but what it will do is to make a few people at Porsche Design a little twitchy, because this promises to be a beautifully executed update that is both delicate, desirable and sympathetically executed. And it’s so much prettier than a Cayman.
